A Practical Strategy for Successful AI Implementation in 2026

Picture your leadership team a year from now, able to say exactly what AI changed in the business and what it returned. In about four minutes, Ed Becker walks through the questions to answer before you scale any AI application, from who owns the result to how you will measure the return.

Put this episode to work with the free resource that goes with it.

Successful AI implementation is not mainly a technology question. It is a business, governance, and change question. Before you scale an AI application, make sure you can answer the questions that protect value, people, and trust.

Start with the business context. Does the application support your strategy, create new value, and fit your wider responsibilities, including your ESG goals? Define one problem at a time, the benefit you expect, the human owner accountable for it, and the controls designed in from the start.

Then define success before implementation begins. Decide what success and failure look like, what data you need for a timely proof of concept, and how performance will connect to a quantifiable business and financial return. If you cannot measure the outcome, you cannot govern it well.

Next, understand what AI already exists in the business. That includes applications sponsored by the organization and ad hoc tools used by enthusiastic employees. Create an inventory, check the outputs, set practical policies, and make sure you can explain how each important application works when stakeholders ask.

Trust starts with the data. Check that inputs are accurate, appropriate, and of sufficient statistical quality. Look for bias before it is implemented at scale. Ask who could be disadvantaged, how concerns are raised, and how people will understand the inputs, process, and output of a more complicated model.

Different functions will mature at different speeds. Some may be experimenting while others are operating at scale. Your governance model should allow for that reality while still defining life cycle ownership, maintenance, escalation routes, stakeholder communication, and alignment with investor priorities.

AI also changes how people work. Identify the training and skills the workforce needs, test output quality, assess unintended consequences, and decide where a human must check the result before it reaches a customer, an employee, or a business decision. Treat AI implementation as change management, not just deployment.

Plan for the moment an application behaves unexpectedly. Who can pause it? Who can roll it back? How quickly can the business respond? Put the application inside the risk register and enterprise risk management system. Then consider culture, workforce impact, and reputational risk before launch.

Security and compliance need the same attention. Protect business data, maintain privacy, and understand the frameworks relevant to the application. That may include the UK Code of Practice for the Cybersecurity of AI, the EU AI Act, and ISO/IEC 42001. Because standards and regulation are moving, assign ownership for staying current.

Finally, measure the actual impact. Did the application improve a business process or outcome? What performance improvement and financial return did it create? What does it mean for supply chain partners? And how does your integrated management system need to change?

The goal is not AI adoption by itself. The goal is trusted, measurable business value.
